Hey Guys!
Posted on July 11, 2009I’m not exactly going to shutter this blog, as I rather like jwiltshire.org. It’s been with me, in various incarnations and domain names, for a solid seven years now. But let’s call it an extended hiatus. Rather than posting here very often, I’ll be posting mostly smaller posts, along with the usual random crap, at Futura Bold Italic. So if you aren’t already subscribed there, do it.
Elsewhere on the web, just look up at the navbar under the picture there. That’s got links to my Flickr, my Twitter, and my Vimeo account. Those are good fun too.
Have a good day, we love you.

I Am a Patron of the Arts
Posted on March 23, 2009
A fellow I know through the local internet forum, Bryan Klopping, is about to attend art school, and to fund his ventures, he asked around if anyone would like to commission a painting. I thought about it, and quickly decided upon commissioning a portrait of the photo on the right
this post for details of that night.) We were all very excited about the prospect of the painting. A canvas was quickly procured.
Bryan gave me updates over the next few weeks letting me know the status of the painting, and finally, last Friday, it was finished. I excitedly made my way over to Bryan’s apartment, and was in awe of the beauty held before me.
The painting now hangs in my office at work, that I share with Don. We’re very excited to have it, and the response from around work has been very positive. If you’re interested in having a painting done by Bryan, let me know, and I can hook you up.

Douche Moments
Posted on August 31, 2008I was driving through the parking lot the other night, coming home from a long day at work, and I happen to see a pair of attractive girls getting out of their car, presumably also coming home from a long day somewhere. I am one who is often wont to listen to music while I drive, and at a loud volume, because that’s the way music should be listened to. (I am also one who is often wont to use words like “wont”, but that’s neither here nor there.) So I drive past, looking cool and such. I see them, they see me. And then it hits me.
Fuck. The song coming out of my iPod is ska. I hadn’t really been paying attention to what was playing, and now, instead of cool, I was the guy listening to ska. A ska cover song in fact. Ska-punk covers are the pinnacle of douchiness, and to be seen in public listening to such is a terrible thing. I shall be forced to wear a badge of shame for this terrible douche moment.

New Tech at Home
Posted on July 10, 2008Since USPaul had to go all high and mighty and brag about the cool new stuff he got, I figure I’d do the same. Gotta show off the goods, y’all.
- A Navigon GPS unit – Not technically here yet, but it should be by next Monday. Woot had these on sale the other day for 80 bucks. I’ve been wanting a GPS unit for a while, but was a little leery of the price point. Not that a good GPS unit isn’t worth $300-$400, but I’m not sure if I’d get $400 worth of use out of one. However, at a sub-$100 price point, that’s well worth it to me. And it’s even a talky kind, which is more than I was expecting at that price. I’m pretty ‘cited.
- New RAM for the eMac – I got the eMac a couple months back, and while neat and a great deal, it was kinda light on the RAM. Only 256 MB. So I finally put down a little money and got a gigabyte’s worth from OWC. And I’ll be damned, but the thing is hecka zippy after the upgrade. By the way, the upgrade was super easy, only one phillips-head screw to deal with. Now I just have to find some OSX install CDs for it (I’m watching you eBay), because my experience with Linux on it has been, shall we say, sub-par. (Seriously, no sound on it, and no chance of getting Flash working, ever. F that.)
- Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii – I f’ing love this game. I’ve already sunk several hours into it and I’m only a tiny bit through. It’s the same basic premise as the past couple of Mario games, collecting stars. But this game has the best graphics yet, a great soundtrack, and is trippy as hell. You play on little planets, and so half the time you’re hanging upside down. When I first started I was afraid of jumping because I didn’t know if I’d fall off or not. Still, this game is fun. I’d say the best installment since Super Mario RPG for the SNES.
- No New iPhone – Which is strange I know, because it’s pretty much expected of me. Hell I do want one, I really do. Even though my current iPhone will get the version 2 software. Even though it would represent an extra $15-$20 a month on my phone bill. Even though it’s the same kind of crappy camera, and the same processor. I still want one. Faster internet is one thing, but I’m most excited at the prospect of having 16 gigs of flash memory versus my current four, and having better battery life. But, here’s the dealbreaker. There’s no 3G in Nebraska. Whatsoever. In fact, a huge majority of the country lacks AT&T’s 3G coverage. And I’m just not at all willing to pay an extra $20 per month that I’m simply not getting. F that.
But then again, at least it’s not Rogers Wireless.

Leaving Tomorrow
Posted on June 30, 2008Going up to my step dad’s home town of Butte Nebraska for Pancake Days and Independence Days celebration. Because it’s a town of about 400 people, most of them elderly, in the middle of nowhere, I don’t expect much in the way of internets. Though I will be wardriving the little town. I might even buy some chalk. Realistically though, I’ll be lucky if I even get cell phone reception. We’ll see. (The town has a website, so there must be internet there somewhere, right? Unless they outsource their internets to O’Neill…)
And talk about timely, this just got posted today at Photojojo. Expect Pancake Days pictures upon my return.

Save Me Obi Ken Schimekobi, You’re My Only Hope!
Posted on June 4, 2008Tornado sirens went off about half an hour ago. I was a bit confused because, outside of the twice weekly tests of the civil defense system. Because basically there’s not much threat of an air raid these days. Here’s a map of what’s happening right at this moment, I live right at the point of the blue arrow:

About 45 minutes ago, being as there was an apparent immediate threat of tornado, I naturally went outside with the camera, so as to show others exactly what this storm looked like. Here’s the first picture, facing south Lincoln:

I live right near

You can even see the reflection of the southern sunlight in the building’s glassy fascia. Pretty keen, huh? The joys of living in the Great Plains.

Official Hiatus
Posted on April 27, 2008I been busy lately with work and everything else, and haven’t had much to put here in a while, so I think it’s time I (temporarily) shutter the blog. Maybe for a month or so, so I don’t have to worry about it, and can “recharge”. Meanwhiles, you can keep up with me at Futurabolditalic, Twitter, and Flickr. And I’ll be back eventually.
iTunes Stats
Posted on April 12, 2008My Top Ten Played Songs in iTunes
4th Avenue Jones – Fabulous Dramatics (53)
Tiefschwarz & Matty Safer – Warning Siren (43)
RJD2 & Ric Ocasek – Through the Walls (42)
Buck 65 – 463 (37)
The Decemberists – 16 Military Wives (33)
Matthew Sweet – Girlfriend (32)
Berlin – Erotic City (30)
10cc – I’m Not in Love (30)
Miri Ben-Ari – Sunshine to the Rain (29)
David Bowie – Space Oddity (29)
Looking at my iTunes library, I notice a weird trend in my most played songs. A lot of them make sense (The Decemberists, Bowie, or RJD2, for example) but others are songs that I wouldn’t expect. 4th Avenue Jones, I haven’t listened to in months that I can recall. The same goes for Miri Ben-Ari. And I certainly wouldn’t have expected 10cc to make the list, catchy though they may be. It may be a matter of songs/sounds I once was really into have now fallen out of favor, or perhaps I was just in a mood then. Except for that Berlin track. I’m not sure what’s up with that.
