Sunday Listening Post
Posted on March 9, 2008For today’s Listenin’ Post, I thought I would dig through YouTube for some great videos from The Old Grey Whistle Test, a classic BBC2 music show along the same lines as the Midnight Special (I will give guest post status to anybody who buys me that set of DVDs…) Anyway, here’s some good stuff here.
David Bowie’s Queen Bitch, a rollicking classic from The Life Aquatic soundtrack. If you poke around YouTube you can find an excellent duet with Lou Reed.
Roxy Music comes at you with Ladytron, and with some costuming so fruity, the BBC ordered that it could only be shown after ten pm. But still, it’s a good track, and it’s got a lot of vintage synth porn.
Maddness’s Night Boat to Cairo. A lot of the “punk” kids today don’t realize how much they owe to second wave ska. Bands like Blink 182 and that obnoxious goofy looking band who’s name escapes me at the moment draw more from this movement than the early ’80s punk movement.
Talking Heads performing Psycho Killer. Thirty years ago I totally would have had a crush on Tina Weymouth. Cute girls that play bass are pretty much the best thing ever.
XTC - Statue of Liberty. This one’s just plain good. And more old school synths.
Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army performing Are Friends Electric. I just picked up the “Replicas” album last week. There is definitely some very good very early electro right there. This is the album that really shows you how the electro movement evolved out of the 1970’s prog and hard rock scene.
Finally, Bill Withers singing Ain’t No Sunshine. I will argue with anyone, any day, preferably after I’ve been drinking so I get all shouty, that Bill Withers was the greatest male soul singer that ever lived. This performance is just amazing, and the band is, as always, so tight.
