Two Weeks with the MacBook Pro
Posted on August 2, 2007Well it’s two weeks out with the MacBook Pro, MBP from here on, let’s sum up, shall we?
- The fans are noisy sometimes. Everybody and their blog complains about the MBP being loud and noisy and weird-sounding. I haven’t really found it to be that annoying. It’s quieter than my iBook G4 was, though it is a little higher-pitched and whinier. But it’s still not as loud as Sarah’s obnoxious HP Media Center laptop.
- Despite that fact, I still installed SMC Fan Control. So a big part of my day usually involves obsessing over the fan speeds and watching the temperature. Why do the fans sometimes roll at 1900 RPM at when the CPU is burning at 140° (Fahrenheit, of course, we’re not commies), but they speed away at 4700 RPM when the CPU is a lowly 115°? It is a mystery…
- I love the shiny “MacBook Pro” logo set in Myriad Pro under the screen. It’s just neat to see it glinting under the reflection of the keyboard lighting.
- Whenever I’m watching something on the iMac, the remote triggers Front Row on the MBP. I could fix that, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Some day.
- VNC is the shit.
- Need to get better syncing between the two computers rolling. Some sort of folder syncing for my projects, and Safari bookmark syncing would be nice. But without paying $100 for .Mac. Screw that.
- I’ve got a wunderbar audio setup in mind for this. I’ve got Logic Express installed, a few Jam Packs, and some guitars. Still need to get: A good USB Mic (or a good USB audio interface) and maybe a new guitar amp.
I gotta say, despite all the concerns I had about getting the MacBook Pro, I’m pretty damn happy to have it. It is shiny and pretty and the best thing ever. AAAAA++++++++ WOULD BUY AGAIN LQQK.

I’ve had mine for some time now as you know and I still think that the Apple logo on the front is upside down. I always go to the wrong side to find the release latch.
I would agree about the apple logo.
Also…only 140F? That’s nothin’. Doing anything halfway processor intensive on the MB will get the CPU up to, and sometimes over, 70C. And, it’s the metric system, get used to it, it’s not just for commies anymore.
(google tip: in the search box type 140f to c (or 70c to f) and the first result will be your conversion. Words with define: too!)
The G3 iBooks had the Apple logo so it was right side up when the lid was closed, but when you opened it up, the Apple would be upside down. I think it’s better this way.
DB: This is America, we use Fahrenheit, our tires have an “I” in them, and we don’t put beans on toast. And c’mon dogg I know from Google calculator, I del.icio.us’d you a good one yesterday).
Fahrenheit is for
loserswinners. Just saying.would rsync work on a mac? It is linux so it should work. It rules.
rsync definitely works on a Mac. It’s available in bash, and there’s also a nifty (and free) front-end GUI for it. Come to think of it, maybe I oughtta give rsync a try again. SuperDuper really isn’t cutting it for me (even though I love the app).
I’ve had a MacBook Pro for about a year now. Couldn’t live without QuickSilver or Textpander. Textpander is especially useful for doing quick html stuff for my blog
I guess since I carry the laptop everywhere I don’t worry much about syncing to another computer. I just worry about backup, and use USB drives for that.
