Single of the Week: Project Jenny/Project Jan
Posted on August 27, 2007A lot of marching bands (or marching band teachers) think they’re cool by incorporating rock songs into their pep band repertoires, but really, hearing seven trumpets and a tuba playing “Centerfold” isn’t really all that cool at all. Enter Project Jenny/Project Jan. Instead of incorporating rock and roll into marching band, they introduced a marching band into their rock and roll, with “Fight Song“. Featuring a marching band fight song for a backdrop and Jim Morrison-style shouting, it’s definitely an interesting sound, and if you can track it down, an interesting video.
Check back in a couple of days for a post about freaks from the state fair. Whoop whoop.

Mmmmm Sammiches at Roost
Posted on August 21, 2007
Foxspit and Beerorkid over at Beeorkid.com decided to have a luncheon at Roost Sandwiches yesterday, and invited the rest of the gang along. Being as it’s been a while since I’ve eaten lunch downtown, and being as I love sandwiches, I went. Though I had to stop at a car wash to get some quarters first for parking, ‘cuz I forgot to bring some.
I got a Presto Pesto chicken sandwich. Chicken, pesto parmesan sauce, lettuce, and roma tomatoes on an 8″ baguette. It was very yummy. I also got some baked pita chips that basically sucked. But the sammich was awesome, if not a little on the small side. Sandwich, chips and an Arnold Palmer all for six bucks. Not a bad lunch I’d say, combined with the good company I keep.
This was also my first time editing photos with the new iPhoto ‘08, versus with Aperture like I normally do. iPhoto’s photo editing capabilities are almost as capable as Aperture’s (though Aperture’s awesome spot removal tool is absent), except for the saturation adjustment, which adds a weird plastic-ness in addition to adjusting color. All in all though it’s handy enough for me to stick with iPhoto ‘08 for management and editing. As usual, check the Flickr stream for a few more pictures, as well as the storm pictures from last night.

More Cars that are Hott
Posted on August 17, 2007I haven’t done one of these in a while. As it may be commonly known, I love me some cars. While I may not have a few hundred million to start my own stable of vehicles, you can be sure these cars would be at the top of my list if (when) I do. Some hot shit here. Click on the little thumbnails for bigger.
MINI Clubman – It’s not unknown that I’m a big fan of the MINI Cooper. In fact, I love ‘em, since I was a kid. The classic, the new, even the little Moke has a place in my heart. And now that the Traveller is coming back as the MINI Clubman, I’m super stoked. All the awesomeness of the regular MINI with a longer wheelbase and hot new design. This thing is a sexy beast. I think I’ll just link to Gabe at Motoring File with his post of the official MINI press release.
Fiat 500 – Much like the MINI, I just gotta love the tiny little classic Fiat 500, with it’s snub front end, and its snap-on vinyl flap roof. So natch I was excited when they announced a remake, MINI-style. Like the MINI, the 500 is centered around personalization, offering three different trim levels, 15 interior trims, 9 wheel options, 19 decals and 12 body colours. The current trim levels are available with tiny engines that turn out less than 100 horsepower, though they will soon introduce the Abarth version, with either a 135 Hp or a 155 Hp engine, that will compete with the MINI in the market. Good luck finding a 500 though; Fiat’s CEO has announced that within a month of launch, they’ve received 57,000 orders, the entire production run for 2007. They are looking for ways to increase production due to the huge demand.
Infiniti G37/Nissan Skyline – Coming later this month, the newest upgrade to the Skyline dynasty is the G37. Equipped with a 330hp V6 engine, this sexy coupe is one of the finest vehicles coming out of Japan right now. Of course, what’s truly exciting about the Skyline family is coming Spring of next year, when the GT-R comes out. The GT-R is what made the Skyline so desired, with a legendary, almost limitless amount of potential horsepower. The next GT-R will be a purebred sports car, with an engine tuned by British motor legends Cosworth, and suspension by Lotus. Expect a twin turbo V6 putting out gobs of power. The vehicle is expected to retail for $65k.
Dodge Challenger – Well let’s see. Two European cars, a Japanese car. Gotta throw some American muscle in there! The Dodge Challenger, one of the badass-est cars to come out of the ’70s (we’ll just ignore the ugly piece of shit second generation that came out from ‘78 til ‘83), is ready for a comeback. Coming out in 2008, this is a true American sports car, complete with a 6.1L Hemi V8 under the hood. It’s a true two-door hardtop (no b-pillar!), something that you never see in American cars these days. So far the challenger is a mysterious beauty, as Dodge has kept a lot of details under wraps. But with all the retro muscle car styling, it. Will. Be. Awesome!
Welp, that’s all I got for now. Good day to you.

Single of the Week: The Libertines
Posted on August 15, 2007Ahh the Libertines. What’s not to love about them? An early ’00’s post punk garage rock revival band with a singer fueled entirely by crack cocaine and heroin. Drunkenly slurred lyrics over bashed out guitar rhythms and banging drums, the bands career blew up and fell apart almost as quickly as their songs did. So this week, I’ma feature a short song by them, “Arbeit Macht Frei“. This song bangs and crashes. Vocalist Pete Doherty drunkenly shouts out verses about hypocrisy and racism in post-war England. That is, if you can make out the words. And the whole thing is done in a minute and thirteen seconds.

News Hottie of the Week: Daneida Polanco
Posted on August 13, 2007
Born in San Francisco de MacorÃs, Dominican Republic, sexy Daneida Polanco is currently the New York correspondent for Univision’s news hour, Primer Impacto. This NHotW bio may not be the best simply because it was hacked together from her agency’s bio and a website’s interview, (poorly-) translated by Google. We’ll make do though. She arrived in the United States when she was 18 years old and soon she started studying Mass Media Arts at the Bronx Community College. She never dreamed of being in TV, because coming to America she was very shy. But she seems to have overcome that timidity, as during her short career, Daneida has interviewed a number of celebrities for the Univision program. She loves visiting her family home in he Dominican Republic around Christmas time, and is currently taking acting classes on Broadway.

J. Anton Report for July, 2007
Posted on August 9, 2007
Running a little late with this one; forgot about it. Whoops. It’ll be a short one. Anyways, last month was a fun one. On July 5th, the exciting day finally came. I saved enough money (sort of) to purchase my MacBook Pro. Technically I put a portion of that purchase on credit, but that’s almost paid off soonish anyways. The hard part? The almost two weeks of having to wait for it. As it turns out, shortly after I ordered mine, the wait increased too, so I guess I got my order in under the wire.
July 12th-15th I survived the massive member guest golf tournament at work. It’s always a huge pain in the ass, and I’m glad it’s over. ‘Til next year. Made a little bit of cash though. July 17th was the really exciting day though. That was when my MacBook Pro finally came. It’s fantastic to have, and I’m typing this very missive on its aluminum keys. On July 18th, I registered the domain for Badblogs 2.0. I got the site up and running a few days later. Unfortunately I was not able to get the original domain (which, as it turns out, I had built up a lot of Google juice for), stupid domain squatters. But the new one is good too. It feels good to be Badbloggsing again.
On July 30th I tried to install Solaris on a separate partition of the MacBook Pro. However, the damn installer wouldn’t load. So I re-repartitioned, and tried Parallels. And the damn installer wouldn’t load. All of my forays into Linux end the same. Some day… All in all a good month though, may there be many more!

News Hottie of the Week: Lisa Stites
Posted on August 8, 2007
I had to work at the ungodly hour of 6:30 am last Sunday, which meant that there was nothing on tv for me to watch while waiting for somebody to show up. This mean I had to watch Omaha ABC affiliate KETV’s Sunday morning news show. However, filling in for their normal weekend morning anchor was one Lisa Stites. According to her KETV bio, Mrs. Stites loved reporting since she was a child. Back in high school, she won a national scholastic reporting prize dealey. She graduated in 2005 from the University of Missouri, and interned at the NBC news bureau in London. After graduating she went on to work at a tv station in Kansas before moving up to Omaha where she resides now. She enjoys painting, poetry, Harry Potter, and bad country music.
(Yes, that was the best image I could get of her. There are no pictures of her on the internet that I can find. (Except for a thumbnail of her and her husband on Facebook.) So I went to AOL video, which has a reserve of KETV news stories for some reason, that don’t work in OSX so I had to load up XP in Parallels using Internet Explorer, and screenshot it. So that’s what you get. But she’s hotter than the picture.

Yay Hurray it’s iMac Day!
Posted on August 7, 2007
It’s my favorite day, when Apple rolls out new products and software! Let’s dig in, shall we? I’ll start off with the new iMac. I’m not gonna lie. I don’t think I care for it. I like the bigger, cheaper sizes. (I still remember they day they abandoned the 15″ iMacs… So long 17″, I’ll keep you around.) I like the upgraded video cards, the bigger hard drives, the faster chips. It even meets the EnergyStar requirements, for you hippies. I love the aluminum enclosure. But you know, the problem for me is, that black glass around the screen. It looks awful and distracting and weird to me. DB says that it would be prudent to wait until I see it in person to make my decision, so I’ll wait. As for buying one? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a new iMac and all, but I’m not due for a new one until spring of 2009. In good time I will buy a new one, don’t worry.
iLife ‘08 came out today too. New features look slick. In iPhoto, I like the Events feature. Since most people take pictures at events (weddings, birthdays, bar crawls, etc.), it only makes sense to organize them that way too. iMovie was completely rewritten too. Before, it was Final Cut lite. Nice enough to use, but the new version makes it even easier to jump right in. I definitely need to get a video camera. Also, storing all your clips in a library is an awesome idea. You never know when or where you’re going to need to insert that clip of Tyler getting hit in the balls. Garage Band has some cool new features. Better management for scoring, multi-take recording, dynamic effects (finally! I’ve been wanting that for a while now) and visual EQ. The new Magic Garage Band deal looks kind of gimmicky to me, especially with the goofy animation, but I guess I’ll have to play around with it to see. Even more shocking was that they released a new Jam Pack today. They haven’t done that in years. The new one centers around vocals, adding Gregorian chant, beat boxing, and different choirs and ensembles. I’m hoping it will include some Tuvan throat-singing, at least until I figure out how to do it myself. And finally, there’s iWeb. My favorite new feature with iWeb is that it finally supports non-.Mac hosting. Before you could only automagically upload to a .Mac site. If you wanted to host your iWeb site somewhere else, you had to manually ftp your site up from your Sites folder every time you made a change. It’s got some new googley integration too, and I’m guessing there are a few other neat features tucked away. And yes, I did place my order straight away. I’ll have my full review in a couple of days when it shows up.
iWork ‘08 too? Does the fun ever end? Keynote? Wank wank. If I were the sort of jerk that had to make presentations, I would love Keynote. It’s about a million times better looking than anything Powerpoint shits out. Pages is awesome, I will admit. Microsoft Word may be more powerful than Pages, but all that power (read: feature bloat) don’t mean nothing when you’ve got a 20 page paper, double spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman. Pages focuses on form, making it easy to create beautiful documents. The big announcement though is Numbers. It’s been rumored since iLife ‘06 came out, so it’s neat to see it finally released. With the addition of a spreadsheet app, iWork takes on a new meaning: It’s a big raised middle finger to Microsoft and the “we’ve-delayed-Mac-Office-2008-once-again” crew. Not only is iWork cheaper ($79 vs. $399? Who do they think they’re kidding?) but it’s more Mac-centric. And not as bloated.
All in all, a good smack in the mouth of Apple stuff. Now we just have to wait until Leopard come out…
Update! Transmission, my favorite Bit Torrent client for downloading warez free and legal Creative Commons music The Bible and other books about Jesus was updated today. One of the big new features? Selective downloading, i.e. only downloading the files you need out of the whole pack in the torrent. Whoohoo!
Space McDonald’s!
Posted on August 4, 2007I was at work the other night, and we were discussing space (I think, otherwise the idea just came out of nowhere, can’t have that) when an idea struck me. I told the fellas, “I bet you, ten dollars right now, the first business in space will be a space McDonald’s.” “Like on the moon?” John asks. “No,” I says, “I’m thinking the International Space Station.” It makes perfect sense. What better to remind the brave astronaut of home than an all beef patty, tomato, lettuce, and onion all on a sesame seed bun? Mmmm.

The next thought that occurred to me though was that they would have to change the name of a few menu items, such as the Quarter Pounder with cheese. Weight is a function of gravity, and being as the ISS is a zero-g environment, the Quarter Pounder would in fact not weigh a quarter of a pound. Although the idea of a Double No-Pounder does sound cool to me. And think of the marketability! You can eat all the burgers you want and not gain weight. Also, thanks to special relativity, you can eat burgers in space and actually get younger! Brilliant!
Andrew and John decided that Starbucks would soon follow (and I guess it makes sense, given the name), but I’m secretly hoping that the next to go will be Carl’s Jr., because a Space Monster Thickburger would be completely awesome.
