News Hottie of the Week: Rachel Nichols

Posted on July 31, 2007

I have a feeling one mister DB will appreciate this news hottie: ESPN’s Rachel Nichols (not to be confused with the other Rachel Nichols, that models and is on ABC’s Alias (a show I have never watched). Nichols reports for SportsCenter and does other “human interest” stuff for ESPN; I was unaware the sports network had such things. She’s previously worked for the Washington Post, so she must have some journo-cred. It’s been pointed out by many people that she never blinks (something I had noticed when I first caught her on the tv) so it’s very possible that she’s a robot or a zombie. As a bonus fun fact: Her step-mom-in-law is well-known journalist Diane Sawyer. (That’s a lot of hyphens for one sentence.) Also: She’s a hot redhead that likes sports. I bet she likes bacon too.

Single of the Week: Morning Theft

Posted on July 30, 2007

Hey it’s a single of the week. Neat! Our single this week is “30 Helens Agree” by Morning Theft. (The title is from an old Kids in the Hall series of sketches that were pretty good.) The guitar work is great, the bass drives the song, and the drum beat is this crazy almost 5/4-ish pattern. This track is off their “The News Says It’s Raining in New York” EP, which is altogether a great collection of songs. And one of the guys in the band added me on Last.fm. So I guess that’s cool too. They even have some free mp3s up for the downloadin’ over at their website.

Area Woman’s Facebook Profile Reveals Disappointing Taste in Music, Movies

Posted on July 26, 2007

Austin TX — After months of internet stalking co-worker Jessica Lanford, area librarian Dave Roday was first elated then disappointed when he finally was friended by Lanford on social networking website Facebook.com. “I’ve been avoiding adding her on Facebook because I just didn’t want to seem creepy or too forward or anything. I mean we talked a few times a week at work and stuff and I thought she was cute and all. But I didn’t want to cross that line and mess stuff up.” Despite the fact that Lanford’s profile wasn’t visible to Roday, he checked twice weekly to see if her thumbnail photo had changed. Roday assumed his luck had changed for the better when checking his email Tuesday, he saw a notification that he had a friend request from Lanford. Quickly logging in to the website, popular among teens and young adults, and confirming their friendship, he checked his co-worker’s profile.

However, his mood quickly darkened upon seeing her interests section. A scan of Lanford’s favorite movies revealed a strong liking for teen comedies. “I thought she seemed cool, I mean, she seemed pretty smart and all. I was thinking of inviting her over to my apartment to watch some Goddard films, but I guess I’d be better off with Mean Girls,” the disappointed librarian had to say. “When I saw her favorite bands, it was even worse. Dave Matthews, Coldplay, Creed, and I think I even saw My Chemical Romance. Man, I guess I really read her wrong.” Roday was overheard telling his roommate that despite his major disappointment, he might “still try to hook up with her once or twice.”

A later discovery found that Lanford had joined a Facebook group supporting a Republican candidate for governor. Roday refused to comment on the development.

MacBook Pro? Is it teh sex? Yes, yes it is.

Posted on July 19, 2007

I placed my order on the fifth of July for my 15″ MacBook Pro. This was after months of scrimping, scrounging, saving, hustling, and daily checking of the Apple store. Finally, I made it. And then I had to wait two weeks. Apple is currently underproducing the 15″ MacBook Pro, so there is a 7-10 day wait for ‘em. But finally it shipped, out of Shanghai. I followed its voyages across through the jungles of the Philippines, doing god-knows-what in Mindinao, then across the Pacific to Anchorage, rooming the the stalwart Inuit on the frozen tundras, before trekking through the wilds of Canada down to America Proper, stopping for a quick jaunt to Indianapolis before coming home to sweet old Lincoln.

I was very excited to open the box. This machine is awesome. The brushed aluminum is simply gorgeous in person. The screen is wonderful (no dead/stuck pixels). Two gigs of RAM make the machine pretty damn fast. And the 120 gig hard drive gives me plenty of space to play around with. The wifi works fine, which was a concern due to somebody else having an issue with that. In fact the only issue I’ve been having involves the auto dimming of the screen and keyboard. Every now and then the screen or the keyboard dim just a few notches without any import from me. I know that some machines have a sensor that automatically dims the keyboard in bright light to save battery, so I’m guessing I’m somehow triggering that. As it turns out, there’s a setting for this. Score one for actually checking System Preferences. Also, there’s a little dent in the keyboard bevel, between the space bar and the cmd key; whether that’s a manufacturing defect or supposed to be there I’m not sure. I could easily imaging a wire going under the raised bit. Confirmation from The Queen that her MBP doesn’t have a dent, so it’s just mine. It’s okay though, chicks dig scars.

I love sitting on the couch and being able to VNC into the iMac to check the news reader/email. The iSight is fun to use on the road. Two-finger scrolling is a joy to use. Everything about this machine makes me love owning a Mac all over again. Be sure to check the Flickr stream for more photos of this sweeeeet machine.

By the way, I’ve got five Pownce invites to give away if anybody wants one. Pownce is the new social-miniblog-file-sharing-networking-2.0-twitter-like dealie from Kevin Rose and a bunch of other people who weren’t on the cover of Business Week magazine. It’s kind of like Twitter, but offers the ability to share files, photos, and links with friends. It’s also more stable, but probably just because it’s in private beta. But ask away if you want in on it.

Mmmm Pizza

Posted on July 14, 2007

Stopped by Le Quartier Bakery the other day. At Meridian Park in Lincoln, it’s a couple of blocks away from my apartment, so when I heard how awesome it was, I had to make sure to check it out. First of all got a bleu cheese loaf from them. It’s just a loaf of bread with bleu cheese chunks baked into the bread and crust. So good I could eat a whole loaf in one sitting if I tried. I also picked up a three pack of pizza crusts. I wish I had gone earlier because they were out of wheat crusts so I had to settle for white. But the white was still good. I stocked up on other pizza supplies and made some the other night. (Too busy working, didn’t have time to post this sooner. Tonight is the last night of the huge member guest tournament at work, and then it all goes downhill from here.)

I started with the crusts, and added Outlaw Spice Co. pizza sauce. It’s a local brand, and the sauce is pretty good. Not too sweet but not too salty either. It’s right in the middle there. And I get to support a Lincoln company. Neat-o!

On one pizza, I went with straight pepperoni and cheese, a classic. I’ll admit I cheaped out on the pepperonis, (they were Oscar Meyer brand) but when I was at the supermarket I was in a hurry and couldn’t find anything else. They were still good, though very greasy. There was nasty pepperoni jelly in the bottom of the container. The other pizza I went with pepperoni and cheese again (you get a lot of pepperonis in that little container) but I mixed in pesto, garlic, and a little cheese with the sauce. We didn’t have any good herbs to mix in, otherwise I would have done that as well.

I baked the pizza for 11 minutes at 475. The directions with the crust said 7 minutes, but with my piling on of the toppings, it took a little while longer for the cheese to get all gooey and melty. The end result was very good. I used a little too much pesto, but I can scale it back next time. It still came out tasting very yummy, and it even tasted great the next day.

End result: Pizza very good. I highly recommend you, the precious reader, try it some time.

Crap. Tagged Again

Posted on July 9, 2007

As DB was bothered about being tagged for a meme, as am I. But I’ve got nothing else going on at the moment, so I’ll take the chance to post something. This is a favorite podcasts dealie. Podcasts are fun as long as I have the time for them. Some of my top choices are:

And that’s it. There are other good ones I subscribe to, like Bonjour America, Aperture Tips, and Be A Design Cast (again, run by some local boys), and those are good too. But I’m tired of writing. So screw off all of you. And who gets tagged next? You do. Go ahead and write up your favorites and post a link in the comments, iffin you want.

News Hottie of the Week: Repeat

Posted on July 5, 2007

A reader recently alerted me that past NHotW Nicole Lapin didn’t recieve a proper picture in her post last August, where I used a standard head shot of miss Lapin. They have therefore provided me with these pictures, which do a lot more justice to the CNN correspondent. Totally hawtsome.

The original images she sent me were insanely huge. Nearly 3 Mb each. So now I’ve got hi-res images of a news hottie. Do you know how hard those are to find on the web?

Enjoy!

Single of the Week: ELO and Uriah Heap

Posted on July 3, 2007

Definitely going old school with the singles this time around, so hang on. This post is inspired by an excellent tv show I’ve been watching courtesy of the BBC, Life on Mars, about a Manchester detective who gets hit by a car, and wakes up a detective in 1973. Is he in a coma dream, did he travel back in time, or is he just crazy? It is a mystery. The show has a kickin’ soundtrack from the early ’70s British rock scene though, so it’s definitely a worth checking out. Our first single of the week is Electric Light Orchestra’s “10538 Overture“. This cut has that great descending guitar riff, and with the horn in there, it bears a resemblance to Rod Stewart’s “Hand Bags and Glad Rags” or the Faces’ “Flying”. There’s a nutty cello running all through the track that plays well off of the acoustic guitar. It’s a neat song, even during the bizarre breakdown towards the end.

The second single for the week is Uriah Heep, with “Gypsy“. For some reason, I never imagined myself listening to Uriah Heap, but here we are. This track has a great pulsing beat that just hammers away. The electric organ in this song thrashes all over the place. It’s a great song that sets a certain tone for a scene.

The J. Anton Report for June 2007

Posted on July 2, 2007

It was another banner month around jwiltshire.org so let’s get started shall we? June 4th was an exciting day as I was finally able/remembered to buy a second gig of RAM for the iMac. I can now run Safari and a couple of widgets at the same time. On June 6th, whilst working at a wedding reception, I invented a delicious shot.

Then came June 15th, when I sold my iBook, Marguerite. I had put the laptop up on Craigslist for a month and a half, where I got some interest, but no offers. So I then lowered the price and posted it on Craigslist again. And once again, after a month I got no offers. Then I saw that Facebook added a marketplace. So on a whim I posted the iBook there at my original asking price, and naught but a couple of hours later, my laptop was sold. Score one for Facebook.

June 19th marked the halfway point for getting my MacBook Pro. For those curious, I am now less than $700 away from that goal, or two thirds the way there. And on June 31st, I almost broke down and bought an iPhone, which would set me back on that goal by half. Eyes on the prize.

Let’s hope the coming month is just as exciting, and possibly new-laptop-alicious.
