Fan Art Revue III

Posted on April 30, 2007

Back again for another week of madness. Are you excited? Can you handle it? Is your mind being blown?!

I know there’s gayer M*A*S*H fan art than this. I just haven’t found it yet. Soon though… Until then, enjoy this drawing of Hawk and Trapper.

Data doing Shakespeare in a lame joke. So it goes.

I think someone read a little too much into ST:TNG if they gathered that Data was gay and proud. So it goes though.

This is supposed to be A.C. Slater from Saved by the Bell. I have yet to figure out why he’s playing tympani in his underpants. The world may never know.

Another MythBusters drawing. I don’t know what the joke is here, what Buster is supposedly doing, or why they’re talking to anime people, but here it is.

Stay tuned next week for more terrible, terrible fan art.

Single of the Week: Daft Punk and Matthew Sweet

Posted on April 28, 2007

First single this week, the heavily filtered, hard-samplin’ “Around the World” by Daft Punk, off of their Homework album. This song is meant to be danced to, and this fact is well demonstrated in the video by Michel Gondry, complete with dancing girls, skeletons, guys in track suits, and just weird dudes. Daft Punk definitely know their way around a synthesizer and a sampler. For a list of their excellent use of samples, check out this post at Palms Out Sounds.

Our second awesome track is a Matthew Sweet classic, “Girlfriend“. The rhythm guitar on this song is straight out of the Bob Seger bluesy guitar book, and the lead guitar is almost psychedelically blasted all over, but they both play so well together. This is just a great rock song. Fun fact! Matthew Sweet grew up in Lincoln, NE. In high school, my mom dated him, “before he got all weird-looking.” I was in the sixth grade with his niece; she was a hot redhead, though I haven’t seen her since then. Good times.

Pictures of the New Car

Posted on April 26, 2007

As ya seen yesterday, I got a new car. But I been too busy to actually get pictures of the thing until today. So here ya go. All purty and light-boxed up for you to click on.

I’m in Debt Nearly $6,000!

Posted on April 24, 2007

But the good news is I got a new car out of the deal. Well, new to me. I am a new owner of an immaculately cared for 2001 Ford Taurus. I know, it’s a Taurus. It’s a family car, and I’m not a family man. But another thing I am not is a man of means, and so I can’t be too choosy. Especially with how nice this car actually is. The body and paint is flawless, as is the interior, and even the engine compartment is really clean. It took me a solid six and a half hours of dealing with the dealership, driving to my apartment to pick up some paperwork, returning to the dealership, driving to the bank, driving back to the dealership, back to the bank, and then to the dealership again. It was a lot of work. But I have a new car.

Some talking points on the new car:

More Fan Art Fun!

Posted on April 23, 2007

Thanks to the magic of the internets, I’ve got more exciting fan art fun for you to make you wish you were blind or could stab out your eyes. Enjoy!

This lovely is a recreation of a famous Van Gogh self-portrait, after he cut off his ear. But instead of Señor Van Gogh, it features a teletubby. Interesting.

Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter, or, as dubbed by artist iamonly_steph, Lord Moldifart. Clever.

This image, by artist QuietRefrain, is certain to give you nightmares. Stare into the details in the face. Yes, stare.

PhoenixDreamAngel drew this image of Hercules and whoever his love interest was in that Disney movie with James Woods. There’s maybe just a little too much detail in Hercules’s crotch-al area.

Hey internet! Do you know what we need? A furry version of Wayne Brady! Thanks!

I fear that this is all I can handle for this week. Check back next week for more Fan Art Revue!

Single of the Week: Paul Pena

Posted on April 22, 2007

I’m gonna do a triple-slam on this post, but I can’t help myself, Paul Pena could write some damn good songs. All three of this week’s singles are from Pena; two from his “lost album”, New Train, recorded in 1973 but never fully-released until 2000. Born with congenital glaucoma, Pena was completely blind by the age of 20, but he remained one of those greats that was there all throughout history, but pretty well unknown. In the late ’60s he opened up for acts such as the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa, he played bass on Bonnie Raitt’s debut album, and was a guitarist in the T-Bone Walker band in the 1970’s, playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Our first single is “Jet Airliner“, originally written and recorded by Pena on this album, which grew to later fame when it was recorded by Steve Miller in 1977. Pena’s version is a little slower, a lot bluesier, and maintains the driving rhythym guitar that made Steve Miller’s cover so catchy. In fact, for much of his life, Pena’s main source of income was royalties from the Steve Miller recording.

The second single, also from New Train, “Cosmic Mirror” is very bluesy as well, but with a funky heavy phaser laid over the guitar. The song was recorded while Pena was just jamming, and the engineer decided to lay down what he was playing.

Pena didn’t achieve much recognition until 1999, when he appeared in Ghengis Blues, a documentary about Pena’s travel to Tuva to compete in the Khoomei Symposium, a gathering dedicated to Tuvan throat-singing, which is an otherwordly sound on its own. Check out “Kongurey” from the soundtrack, a mix of Tuvan music and American bluegrass.

Sadly, Pena’s later life was very troubled as he had little money, struggled with diabetes, and suffered from pancreitis, misdiagnosed as cancer. He died in his apartment of complications from his illness in 2005.

Fan Art Revue

Posted on April 16, 2007

A new feature here at jwiltshire.org, the Fan Art Revue. I thought it might be a good idea to delve deep into the horrible world of fan art and bring you the best of what’s out there. I lowered myself deep into the dark subworld of slash art, furry art, and DeviantArt to see what I could find. Without further ado, here’s your first installment:

Kyle and Damien from South Park. Apparently someone has a thing for gay paper-cutout eight year olds.

Penn and Teller, as furries. I find the thought of this one quite disturbing; I wonder what they would say about it.

Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters. As much as I didn’t want it to be, I knew that this pairing was likely to pop up. And sure enough, it did. Ick.

Conan O’Brien. I was a little surprised by this one. I don’t know what it is about bad fan art that it is usually done anime-style.

Legolas and Gandalf. There are a lot of gay pairings in Lord of the Rings, but someone being turned on by this one is a bit weird even for LotR fans.

Check back next week for some more fan art fun!

Oh Boy New Lens!

Posted on April 14, 2007

Hey bitches, what’s up? I bought a new fisheye lens for the ole Nikon. It’s pretty sweet. Here’s some pictures.

Definitely click for bigger, and then head on over to the Flickr photostream, there’s always new pictures there.
