Awesome Website of the Week: Twitter.com
Posted on March 10, 2007
Some o’ yous might look at the sidebar (on the right, take your time) and say “Hey Joshua, what’s that flashy badge there what says what you’re doing?” Well that’s Twitter. Twitter is an interesting way to blath about what you’re doing at any given moment (the posts are called “tweets”), and see your friends doing the same. That’s about it really. It’s sort of pointless, but it’s pretty fun. It integrates with your standard IM clients and your mobile phone, so you can post on the website, via IM, or from your cell, as well as recieve updates to those places. Facebook has a similar feature (that was part of what caused a ridiculous uproar among its users, people don’t seem to realize that if they don’t want their privacy violated, they shouldn’t put their private lives out there; it’s just that simple) although it isn’t as advanced or easy as Twitter. And, as a bonus to OSX users, Iconfactory has a nifty (and free) little app called Twitterrific, that looks good and works great with Twitter. I highly recommend it. The Twitter fan wiki also has a list of Twitter apps, hacks, and so forth that is worth checking out. And be sure to look for me there, my user name is jwiltshire. (I should allow a caveat, the fact that today Twitter has been having some problems that will hopefully be cleared up, and at the moment my Twitter badge has been outputting “Undefined”. Soon, we’ll see.) As it turns out, the “Undefined” problem is a Safari issue and not a Twitter problem. I’m gonna email someone about it.

It’s not just a Safari issue. I’m seeing the same problem right now in Safari on the Mac as well as Firefox and IE7 on the PC.
Really? You might want to email the Twitter staff about that. For a week or two now my Twitter badge in Safari hasn’t been returning the null statement any more, so I assumed it was fixed. Of course they’ve been having huge issues with scaling, since everybody signed up after SXSW and it’s kind of blowing up in the media now.
By the way, Kottke has a story about an idea he once had….
