The Dummest Thing I Said this Week
Posted on October 27, 2006I was at Barnes and Noble, looking for some new literature and lamenting the fact that a few of the books on the table looked like they might be interesting and good to read, but there was no real way to tell without buying the book if it would be a good book that I’ve never heard of by an author I’ve never heard of. It looked like something I’d like to read and then, if it isn’t good, return, but if it is good, keep it and seek out other books by that author/series/whatever. I thought out loud to my book buying companion, “If only there was a service like Netflix, but instead of movies, it was for books.
Then after a few minutes I realized that they already have that. It’s called the public library and it’s free.

What’s really cool is the interlibrary loan service as well. Lincoln libraries obviously don’t have as huge a collection as one would find in larger cities, BUT if you go into their “first search” database you can get anything from anywhere. It takes anywhere from 2-6 weeks to get stuff, but its a free service, and you can borrow up to five items at a time from libraries across the country. Your tax dollars at work. Might as well use this service!
