Single of the Week: Cansei de Ser Sexy and Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers (Longest. Post Title. Ever.)

Posted on October 28, 2006

Is it bad that I’ve been drinking simply because there was nothing else to drink in the fridge?

Our first single is from the premier indie electropop from São Paulo, Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for “I Got Tired of Being Sexy” with Let’s Make Love to Death from Above, they’re uber-catchy semi-tribute to Death from Above 1979, who recently broke up. Bonus fact: CSS’s drummer/guitarist Luiza Sá shares my birthday.

Our second single comes from the fine gospel group, Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers, with “Come, Let Us Go Back to God“. It’s a stirring vocal piece that I grabbed after it was repeated many times in the Tom Hanks and Coen Brothers movie that bombed but was actually pretty good, The Lady Killers.

Finally, David Watanabe, creator of awesome Mac apps, released the newest version of Inquisitor for free, which sucks because I paid for it not too long ago. It was only like 5 bucks, but still. It’s the principle. What it does is add auto-complete and quicksearch to your browser’s searchbar. Oftentimes I don’t even have to go to Google’s search results, Inquisitor finds what I’m looking for for me. It’s awesome, so if you use Safari or Camino to browse the web, check it out.

The Dummest Thing I Said this Week

Posted on October 27, 2006

I was at Barnes and Noble, looking for some new literature and lamenting the fact that a few of the books on the table looked like they might be interesting and good to read, but there was no real way to tell without buying the book if it would be a good book that I’ve never heard of by an author I’ve never heard of. It looked like something I’d like to read and then, if it isn’t good, return, but if it is good, keep it and seek out other books by that author/series/whatever. I thought out loud to my book buying companion, “If only there was a service like Netflix, but instead of movies, it was for books.

Then after a few minutes I realized that they already have that. It’s called the public library and it’s free.

I Rock So Hard…

Posted on October 22, 2006

…that they had to create seven of me to spread out the awesomeness over.

HowManyOfMe.com
Logo There are:
7
people with my name
in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?

Also, 7’s pretty low. There are 23 Charles Darwinses and we all know how popular he is today. And 12 Marilyn Mansons. Odd that.

Crash!

I know that DB and the White Roof Radio Gang like watching cars jump over hills and such, so here’s a bonus video for them. Those old Subarus could stand a lot of abuse.

Do I Make You a Little Horny?

Posted on October 13, 2006

I’m not yet sure what to do with these, but thanks to the Mark Foley deal I now have .aiff files of both Larry King and Wolf Blitzer asking, “Do I make you a little horny?” And I’m in a sharing mood. If you’re feeling creative, grab ‘em.

Maybe I’ll come up with something later.

Best Workday EVAR

Posted on October 12, 2006

I work at a golf course. Now that Nebraska is quick approaching welldigger’s ass levels of cold, that means that work is really slow. As in today, there are no tee times whatsoever. So now I have nothing to do for eight hours, what should I do?

I know! I know! Watch the SciFi Channel’s 8-hour Incredible Hulk marathon!

Man, what a crappy show this was. I can’t believe it went on for three or four seasons. They took a comic book that was basically about kicking ass, and tried to turn it into a tv show with Alan-Alda-directing-MASH tenderness and sensibility. Oh, and they took out the best part of the comics, which was all the super-ness. No bad guys with incredible powers or untold maniacal inventions. No guest appearances from Spiderman or the Fantastic 4. Nope, instead it’s “This week, The Incredible Hulk battles an abusive father. Stay tuned for next week, when he foils a guy intent on fixing a horse race.” Watch as David (it was decided that he be called David in the tv show, because it was felt by the show’s producers that the comic book’s choice of “Bruce” was too homosexual) Banner’s uncontrollable rage leads him to throw some trash cans around, push over an abusive spouse, and then run away, making the bad guy seem like a victim of a random assault rather than someone to be arrested when the cops show up. Lame lame lame.

Also, on one episode that was centered around some Chinese people, I am reminded of the fact that it seems around the late ’70’s and early ’80’s there was a group of about three or four Asian-American actors, that were called in to every show on the air whenever an Asian guy was needed. For example, Mako, or the bald kinda dumb-looking guy, who was on MASH, Hulk, Magnum P.I., and everywhere else.

Finally, there was the depressing theme song, tinkled out on the piano, that I swear they played about 50 times an episode. What crap.

Single of the Week: The Twilight Singers and English Beat

Posted on October 7, 2006

The singular single for this week is from ex-Afgan Whigs member Greg Dulli’s side project, the Twilight Singers, with “Bonnie Brae“. It’s got a droning backbeat that almost evokes a heavy emotional feel from the song.

Secondwise is an old English Beat tune I dug up from an LP I found at a garage sale, “Mirror in the Bathroom“, which DB says he already has. The song has an awesome skanking bassline which are completely offset by the swirling chorused guitar riffs.

iTunes, usual, blah.

My, Earth Really is Full of Things.

This is an older commercial, but for those of you who don’t quite get what the best video game in the past ten years is all about, this is a perfect example of Katamari Damacy. And if anyone doesn’t know what to get me for the upcoming Christmas season, a Katamari t-shirt is always nice.
