Singles of the Week: Nonpoint and Supertramp
Posted on September 29, 2006This week we have two somewhat disparate singles to present. But ya gotta live with it ‘cuz that’s how I roll. First is Nonpoint’s cover of the great Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight“. Now, I have no idea who Nonpoint is, but I’m guessing another one of those crappy broody “Nu-metal” bands. However, their heavy rendition of In the Air Tonight is pretty rockin’, even though I think they should have included the heavy noise gates that make Collins’ drumming so recognizable on that track. Anyone would be able to recognise the song just from that one-measure drum fill where it goes dukh-dukh-do-do-doo. Just a minor quibble though. The song might be familiar to some, I think it was used in a commercial for one of those crappy schlock horror movies that come out every summer.
The other single this week is a classic from Supertramp, “Goodbye Stranger“. The song walks a delicate line between smooth yacht rock and heavier beats beneath. And towards the end when the guitar/synth solos kick in there is even solid samba rhythms in the drumming. All in all a good mix.

supertramp is pretty good
Yea, I’ve heard that version of In the Air. meh. It’s ok. I think it lacks the emotion of the original.
Good call on the Supertramp too. Even better since that album is only $6.99 for 15 tracks! You should stock up!
oh yea. WTF is yacht rock?
