Singles of the Week: Nonpoint and Supertramp

Posted on September 29, 2006

This week we have two somewhat disparate singles to present. But ya gotta live with it ‘cuz that’s how I roll. First is Nonpoint’s cover of the great Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight“. Now, I have no idea who Nonpoint is, but I’m guessing another one of those crappy broody “Nu-metal” bands. However, their heavy rendition of In the Air Tonight is pretty rockin’, even though I think they should have included the heavy noise gates that make Collins’ drumming so recognizable on that track. Anyone would be able to recognise the song just from that one-measure drum fill where it goes dukh-dukh-do-do-doo. Just a minor quibble though. The song might be familiar to some, I think it was used in a commercial for one of those crappy schlock horror movies that come out every summer.

The other single this week is a classic from Supertramp, “Goodbye Stranger“. The song walks a delicate line between smooth yacht rock and heavier beats beneath. And towards the end when the guitar/synth solos kick in there is even solid samba rhythms in the drumming. All in all a good mix.

Aldomania 2006

Posted on September 28, 2006

I unfortunately have been caught into reading Mary Worth. Before you wonder why, it’s actually had an interesting storyline, with this weirdo Aldo Kelrast, who is bizarrely smitten with Mary. His fondness for her grows into a creepy stalker’s obsession, complete with “You cannot ignore me!” and all. To catch up with the story you can check it out at The Comics Curmudgeon, complete with reviews and snark. Aldo’s love grows so strong that all of Mary’s friends have to perform an intervention to convince Aldo that he’s barking up the wrong tree with Mary. So Aldo does what any sensible person would do when they are forced to realize that their love for a nosey 60-something year old woman can never be; he gets a bottle of Johnny Walker and drives himself over a cliff. All of which has been rendered lovingly in this hilarous video titled “The Wind Cries Mary Worth”:

One of them “meme” things.

I got tagged by Erin to do it, but I’ll be danged if I’m going to propogate it. So if anyone wants to do it, they may feel free. It’s something called a 7tube tagger thingamajig. I’m not sure where the tube comes into play. But I’m supposed to post seven songs that have been in frequent rotation on my iPod as of late. So here goes:

  1. Los Angeles I’m Yours - The Decemberists
  2. James - Josh Rouse
  3. La Vecina - Los Amigos Invisibles
  4. 2 Horse - Sir Mix-a-Lot
  5. Dead Man’s Party - Oingo Boingo
  6. Déjate Caer - Café Tacuba
  7. Revolution Get Down - The Bellrays

There you have it. All them links open up in iTunes.

News Hottie of the Week: Becky Quick

Posted on September 26, 2006

This week’s news hottie is the very hot Becky Quick, of CNBC’s Squawk Box. She’s so popular she has her own unofficial fan site (from which that photo and this information are gratefully derrived) at BeckyQuick.com. Originally hailing from Indiana, Ms. Quick has a B.A. in political science from Rutgers University, where she served as editor in chief of the school newspaper. She parlayed her talents into a job at the Wall Street Journal, and was instrumental in launching WSJ Online. She spent seven years in all with the Wall Street Journal before moving on to work at CNBC. Earlier this year she was promoted to co-anchor of the Squawk Box, replacing the less sexy Mark Haines, who got his own show later in the morning.

Guest Column: It’s My Duty to Look at Porn

Posted on September 21, 2006

Guest Columnist Steve Whitaker — Friends, I have come to you today to tell you that I feel, within my very being, that it is my patriotic duty to look at pornography. Everyday, dozens of models, sexy babysitters, naughty teachers, and confused young runaways that Ed Powers picked up at the bus station are exposing themselves in front of a camera, all for us to enjoy, and for a check ranging from $50 to $150 dollars. If Misty or Mandy is going to submit to her first time having a complete stranger ejaculating all over her face, all in front of a camera, don’t you think we should be there to share that moment with her?

When I sit down at my computer to begin my daily sessions of looking for new and unseen pornographic websites, the thought eventually occurs to me that somewhere, there are sites that have yet to be seen by human eyes. Are you people hearing me? There are breasts out there, in jpeg form, that nobody has ever seen? Am I the only one who is disturbed by this fact?! That is why, every day, sometimes multiple times in a day, I sit down for an hour or two at a time to find fresh undiscovered boobies. To save these girls from suffering the embarrasment of never having been masturbated to shamelessly.

Some would say that I am naught but a chronic masturbator, a foul-minded self-polluter, a sexually repressed weirdo. To them I say nay, I am a truly dedictated patriot, facing down unseen nipples in the eye and staring at them until they feel it. I am allowing these girls the freedom that they deserve, that they need, knowing that their message has been sent. I hear you girls, I hear you.

Single of the Week: Los Mocosos

Posted on September 17, 2006

This week we have a Spanglish treat from barrio rockers Los Mocosos (literally, the Snots) “En El Amor“. It’s a story of a breakup, as told from both sides of the relationship. The lyrics are written in a very interesting style that they underuse on their first album but do use more often in their later records; the song is written in couplets, with the first line telling the story in English, and the second line in Spanish. My only real complaint with the song is the flute solo towards the end. A flute? C’mon. That solo could’ve totally been an electric guitar, and it would have rocked. I know you guys wanna stick to your roots with ’70’s Hispanic rockers like War and El Chicano, but still. Oh, and speaking of War, they do an awesome cover of “Spill the Wine” on the same album.

News Bionic Hottie of the Week

Posted on September 15, 2006

When I saw this on CNN this morning, it definitely made my day. (Well that and the fact that I bought a new camera, but more on that later.) Claudia Mitchell lost her left arm in a motorcycle accident in 2004. However, thanks to a new prosthetic arm developed by The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, together with DARPA, she has the second working bionic arm, the first belonging to an electrician who lost both arms. It connects to nodes connecting to nerve endings that detects impulses ordering movement, similar to the way the organic nervous system works. Fine motion is still clunky, but general use is there. And the best part? She’s actually kinda hot. Who’d a thunk it? An ex-marine with a robot arm a la T2 and she’s pretty good looking. Good on ya Claudia Mitchell. We at jwiltshire.org hope for the best for our hot new cybernetic overlords. Read more about the whole thing on Google News.

Single of the Week: Gary Wright/Supreme Beings of Leisure

Posted on September 10, 2006

This week’s SotW sucks. Well, in its normal, unwashed, unremixed condition, it does. However, when the Supreme Beings of Leisure get their hands on Gary Wright’s 1976 runaway hit Dream Weaver it actually becomes listenable. This is a remix off of Warner Bros.’ “What Is Hip?, Remix Project, Vol. 1″ album, which also includes a remix of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” remixed by Halou, a very ambient “Ventura Highway”, and chilled hip hop mix of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” that are all worth checking out. I hope Volume 2 has a remix of “Welcome Back” from Welcome Back Kotter, maybe “Suite Judy Blue Eyes”, and definitely some Cat Stevens.

On Pluto

Posted on September 1, 2006

Give it up. If scientists say it’s not a planet, it’s not an f’ing planet. Just ‘cuz you have some sentimental attachment to it, doesn’t make it true. Just ‘cuz a bunch of people decide that it should be a planet because they want it to, doesn’t make it a planet. Science-by-mob-rule doesn’t work. If we change the definition of a planet to include Pluto, then we add two more planets to our solar system, but the same people who want Pluto won’t be so welcoming to the addition. The same deal with creationism. Just because a bunch of people want it to be true, doesn’t make it so. So let it go. Pluto is a dirty hunk of rock in our solar system, and man didn’t evolve from Jesus 6,000 years ago. You don’t get to decide things just because you feel that way, science comes from actual measuring and testing. Everything else is just a whole heap of bullshit.
