Single of the Week
Posted on February 28, 2006I’m in a jazzy kind of mood. A few of you may remember the Lincoln commercials a few years ago that used Mr. Scruff’s “Get a Move On” (and various remixes thereof, that I have yet to find out there.) Well that song used a sample of Bird’s Lament as performed by Louis Thomas “Moondog” Hardin as a tribute to Charlie Parker. It’s a nice song that is, as the Portuguese would say, is full of saudade.
Back to work for me.

Apple Rumours
Posted on February 26, 2006
Since Apple rumours are going off the charts for the special event on Tuesday, including: the video iPod, Intel Mac mini, iSight-sportin’ 13-inch widescreen MacBook, Media Cube, “touch finger LCDs,” 17-inch MacBook Pro, Mac tablet and a hi-fi iPod boombox, I figured I’d add to it. I heard that come Tuesday, Steve is going to definitely definitely definitely announce a 256 Mb iPod Shuffle. It will retail for the bargain basement price of $39. That’s it. All that’s coming. Maybe an update for the Airport base station too. But nothin’ else.

Oh Man.
Posted on February 23, 2006I was so put off that the Olympics are pre-empting two of my current favorite on-air shows, My Name is Earl, and The (American) Office. F’ing Olympics. Ruining not one but two Thursday evening. But now I come to find that there are two Simpsons reruns in half an hour and right now on Austin City Limits, John Fogerty is performing “Fortunate Son”. Awesome!

Backyard Burgers
Posted on February 22, 2006I’ve been meaning to visit Backyard Burgers since they opened a local franchise last year. Two of the managers were previously managers at the club I work at, so at the very least it would be a chance to see what they’re up to. Neither of them were there during my visit, so we’ll continue. The location is not exactly the best. The restaurant is situated in the southeasternmost edge of the city in an area of new shopping development based around a WalMart. The architecture is dictated by the developers, so it pretty much looks like all the other buildings, in a modular sort of a way.
I am terrible at ordering off of a menu, even moreso at a place I’ve never been to before. For this reason I grabbed a carry-out menu for my next visit; but this time around, I had to resort to staring at the pictures of the combo meals and blurting out the first one that sounded good. I opted for the bacon cheeseburger and seasoned fries. (I was offered seasoned, unseasoned, or waffle fries.) The food came up in about five minutes, a reasonable amount of time for something I presume was cooked to order.
The food. I was underwhelmed. Everyone I knew from the club who had been had said that the food was great. The fries were thick, but squishy and kind of wormy. The seasoning on the fries had a burnt mesquite-y taste. They were all around kind of unpleasant. The burger, which is advertised as being 100% Angus beef. The burger was fine, but not impressive. It tasted like something I could have easily made at home. Overall, the experience was kind of bland. I may go back and try a chicken item next time; if my experience is any different, I’ll let you know.

Stuff I Did at WalMart for Three Hours
Posted on February 21, 2006Yesterday, I had to get new tires for the front wheels of the Cougar. This is not something I was excited to do, nor did I enjoy the fact that there was a three hour wait to do so.
- Laughed at the two guys in the waiting room with a newly purchased case and a half of Magic: The Gathering cards, going over their finds.
- Listened to the entire Security Now podcast.
- Sent some text messages.
- Ate a cheeseburger. (Thank you in-store McDonald’s.
- Contemplated the odds of WalMart becoming an MVNO. I say they’ll do it by 2015.
- Saw a guy with not one but two baby arms.
Tempted children with unpaid for candy.- Listened to the entire Katamari Damacy soundtrack.
- Rearranged some product for a while.
- Thought about buying a Nintendo DS, only to return it when my car was done, so I’d have something to do for three hours.
- Thank God I had my iPod, otherwise those Magic card guys might have talked to me.
- Almost got a haircut, “to pass the time.”
- Stared at pens for a while. (I’m really picky when it comes to the pens I use.
- Stole the pen and paper I wrote this down on.
- The LA Times crossword puzzle.
- Buying a bass guitar to practice, and then return when I was done.

Roulette Chocolate
Posted on February 18, 2006If this is not an awesome idea, I do not know what is. Firebox.com is a UK company that makes a box of 12 chocolates. Each chocolate is shaped like a bullet. Eleven of the chocolate bullets contains a sweet praline center; however one contains a serious red hot chili in the center. Sit around with a few of your buddies and recreate your own sweet chocolaty Deer Hunter.
